When I started my mixed media acrylic painting journey, my first collection of materials involved toilet paper rolls that I used for stamping, plastic utensils, potatoes I curved into and used as a stamp, pencil erasers I carved into to create my own stamp, bubble wrap I used for texture, file folders for a foundation, pages of old books and catalogs, scrap fabric and papers, and spray bottles for adding texture.

The traditional art items that I collected included mixed media acrylic paint, watercolor, fabric paint, scissors, glue, paintbrushes, gesso, sharpies, gel mediums, pastels, colored pencils, and crayons, among others. I essentially turned the entire materials collection into exciting fun. This provided me with the interest that currently drives my mixed media acrylic artwork!

Layering

Mixed media painting is about creating layers of mediums that tell a compelling story. The first layer creates a basic background. It could be done using your mixed media acrylic paint or gluing fun paper or both. There’re no set rules to this. All you need is to be creative in your art by putting emotions into it. Don’t mind whether other people understand your story or not. It’s all about bringing out your inner personal voice.

Have a unique focal point

While it is okay for your mixed media artwork to have random thoughts, having a focal point is essential. You can use stamps, images, found items, and other things that interest you to do that. Creatively use glitter, buttons, shells, and other unique small items to bolder the message around your focal point.

Transition to the deep end fast

Your first mixed media painting artwork should make your feet wet so that you learn from it. But strive to move out of the comfort zone into the deep.
